When we looked at all of the choices available for Alzheimer’s care, we knew immediately that there had to be a better way.

Many of the Alzheimer’s care facilities were institutional in nature. As we visited existing facilities, “cold” and “depressing” were two words we remember saying over and over. The question we kept asking ourselves was, “Would we want our mother here?” and the answer was consistently “NO”! We knew in our hearts that families and their loved ones suffering with dementia needed a home and a thoughtfully designed program that focused on their individual social and emotional needs and their remaining strengths and abilities.

If you were to search the country for organizations that feel the way we do, you would find only a handful. There were so few organizations whose only mission was to care for seniors with dementia. It became clear we could provide a better solution. This solution would serve both the person afflicted with dementia and the family who must place their trust in someone else for the care of their loved one.

The spectrum of care available is wide, from the small group home, to the large assisted living facility. In small settings, residents receive intimate care, but often lose professional management. In large facilities, residents benefit from professional management but often lose the intimate environment and flexible program. . We knew that the intimate environment AND professional management could co-exist.

We spent nearly two years developing our small uniquely designed environment, flexible dementia specific programming and professional management plan.

We focused our attention on three areas that needed improvement.

  • Care and focus on the residents’ needs as a person

  • Care and communication with the family

  • Training and support to caregivers

By improving all three of these areas, we know we have created the absolute best dementia care available in the market today.

Our sole mission became to honor and to preserve the dignity and quality of life for our residents, as well as to honor the people that love and care for them. With that as our foundation, AutumnGrove Cottage was born.
